Naples to Tallahassee Heading for Seattle

Naples to Tallahassee

Sunday morning and Wicket is telling me it's time to get up. I glanced at the clock and it said 6:15am, only 15 minutes before I'd planned to get up, so I rolled out of bed and headed for the bathroom to take a shower and wake up. Just before getting in the shower I looked around for Wicket. She usually sits on the bath mat ad waits for me to get done. Nope, not anywhere in the bathroom. I walked back to the bedroom and there she was, on top of the bed. That's when I took another look at the clock, 3:20am. What the heck? Turns out she only wanted me to help her up. Needless to say, I turned out the bathroom light and went back to bed.

O'Dark Thirty and the alarm goes off. Now I can get up and shower, heh, heh!! This time she decided to stay with Tina and Punky until I get done and head for the kitchen. We'd spent the prior couple of days getting ready to go up to the Seattle area, including prepping for having renters for three weeks while we're gone. All the preparation meant we only had to have breakfast, change the sheets and load the car. We were all loaded up, with the kids beds in the back seat and kids in the beds by 8:50am giving us a great start on the drive.

A short stop to top off the tank and we were on I-75 headed north. Blue sky and temps in the mid 60's.

I took the first stint and put on 200 miles before we switched and Tina took the wheel. By 11:30 the kids told us it was time to stop for a pee break. Leaving the freeway Tina found a small country road where we could pull off across from a horse ranch. The girls were happy and ten minutes later we were back in the car and headed north again.

We made a brief pit stop for food around 12:30pm and headed back to the freeway. By now it was getting cloudy but still warm and traffic was becoming increasingly troublesome. We decided to take exit 399 to get on some back roads. Traffic from Tampa on had been terrible, too many cars, lots of accordion driving, not fun. So we got on SR-27 which cut across for Tallahassee parallel to I-10.

Stopping for a break in High Spring, the kids are listening to the music!

Five miles to the northwest and we made a stop in High Spring where there was a bluegrass performance going on next to a railroad museum. The dogs thought it was a great time to stop so they could do a walkabout and visit with people. Next to the park was a church parking lot where there were a couple of vendors. We stopped and bought some homemade cookies for healthy snacks, no sugar and glutten free.

Back at the car I took the wheel and we got on the road again. The closer we get to Tallahassee the darker the sky. According to the weather channel we can expect showers an a brief thunder storm, or two, or three... We had been planning on a short drive on Old St Augustine Road, a section of the old highway that is a "Canopy Road". It branches off about 5 miles before Tallahassee. But about twenty miles from our stop for the night the sky opened up and our speed went down. Thunder and lightening and torrential downpours accompanied us and by the time we reached our turnoff we decided to take a pass and just get out of the rain. But this is a link to a photo of a section of Old St Augustine on Flickr taken by Nathaniel Herera:

We'll drive Bainbridge Canopy Road on our way out of town tomorrow. We reached the outskirts of Tallahassee and pulled over to google our stop, La Quinta Inn. Turned out to be only a few blocks up the road. I pulled under the portico and went in to register. Once that was done Tina and the kids grabbed a few things and headed for the room while I moved the car to a parking spot. After making several trips between the car and  the room, taking the dog beds, suitcases and other stuff up, we settled in for the night with leftovers from lunch for our dinner.

With a walk for the kids around eight o'clock we called it a day!
