Galveston To Lake Charles

Warm and sunny here this morning as we prepare to head out on the next leg of our trip. By 10:00 AM everything was ready to go.

Leaving Via Bayou Rv Resort we got on Hwy 146 N towards Pasadena on the way to our destination resort in Vider Texas, just off I-10 about 100 miles away. Before long the clouds rolled in and we passed through occasional showers.

We reached I-10 just past Bay Town and headed east. Suddenly the sky opened up and we were slowed to 30 mph in order to see the road. Before long we couldn't see 50 yards and everybody slowed down to 15 mph for about a mile before it let up enough to get our speed back up. It finally cleared up a little so we only had the wipers on intermittent.

By 12:15 we passed through Beaumont and exited I-10 to the Boomtown USA RV Park. We decided not to stay (too industrial and too close to the freeway) so we returned to I-10 and backtracked to Beaumont looking for a park that should have been just outside of town. When we couldn't find it we called and it turned out they were a good 15 miles west of where we were. Since it was only another 90 miles to our next stop we decided to move on.

Looping back through downtown Beaumont we got on I-10 and headed for Louisiana. Before long the sun was out and it was a nice day again. About five miles past Lake Charles we cut north on Hwy 165 for 25 miles to the Red Shoes RV Park right next door to the Grand Coushatta Casino Resort http://www.coushattacasinoresort.com/ .

Naturally, the farther north we went the more it showered. By the time we were at our site and disconnecting the car it was pouring great big drops and I got thoroughly soaked. Finally done with set-up, I was able to come in and dry off before changing clothes.

Later, after we had relaxed for a while, we decided to head into town and do a little grocery shopping before dinner. After we got back and put everything away we caught the shuttle to the Casino for dinner and a little gambling. We both had a big cup of Gumbo with chicken, sausage and rice, then we hit the penny slots for an hour. Having little success we came home and settled in for the night.

Tomorrow we plan to do laundry and cleaning chores. Tuesday, if the weather cooperates, we plan to drive back down to Lake Charles and do the "Creole Nature Trail" loop through the bayou country http://www.creolenaturetrail.org/ .

Todays leg, 142 miles. Total for trip including side trips, 3,977 miles.
