Brookgreen Gardens

Saturday the 11th

After our rainy, stormy night, the sun has come out and it promises to be a very nice day. Once done with our morning duties, breakfast and walking the dogs it’s off to Brookgreen Gardens (http://www.brookgreengardens.org/). This is an absolutely stunning combination Garden and outdoor statuary museum. Started in 1931 with the purchase of four old rice plantations, the Huntington family created a wonderful setting with magnificent old live oaks and world renowned sculpture. There is a zoo with plantation animals, an aviary, a low country cultural exhibit and incredible gardens with fountains and sculpture.
We went on a one hour walking tour with one of the docents who told us the history of the plantations and the family that created Brookgreen. Then we spent about four hours walking the grounds. I will share one photo here but even the over 150 shots tina took can’t do justice to the spectacular setting. There are over 1,200 pieces of sculpture done in bronze, aluminum, marble, limestone and other materials by hundreds of artists. Everywhere as we wound our way through the gardens pieces were tucked here and there, some in fountains, some on pedestals , some on garden walls but all of them spectacular. Eventually we had to leave. Even though we walked most of the paths and trails, we know that we saw only half of the art on display. It was really incredible!!
