Myrtle Beach Stroll

Friday the 10th

Today we decided to drive around the Myrtle Beach area. This is definitely a tourist town. From our campground we crossed Business 17 and turned north onto Ocean Blvd. Lined up on both sides of the road are towering Resorts and Condos, very nicely set up for vacationers and right on the beach. As we continue north, the condos give way to private residences for a couple of miles then its more resorts and condos. We cut back to Busn 17 and turn south. On both sides of us are restaurants, fantastic Putt Putt Golf Courses, Beach Wear shops, surf shops and other retail establishments.

Back in the center of town we head west across the inter-coastal waterway to scout out a billiard parlor. We found it but it doesn’t open until later so we head out into the countryside. Well, sort of… Turns out the countryside is a series of Golf Course communities interspersed with gated communities of mini-estates. We drove on for several miles and the only difference was that you could see where the housing crash has put a lot of development on hold in the area, mostly residential. At the same time there are still a lot of commercial buildings and apartments going up.

Deciding to go home for lunch we found a serious car crash on SR 501 East had backed up traffic for miles. So we decided to try an alternate route back across the river. Using a local tourist map we followed a road that should have got us to a river crossing. Except the map hadn’t been updated to reflect road closures from development rerouting. So we back tracked and went in the opposite direction to try another option. This time we were more successful. Eventually we made it back across the inter-coastal and to our campsite where we took the rest of the afternoon off.

Later, after dinner, I took Tina out for a surprise. We went to the Palace Theater to see a show, Le Grand Cirque! This is an acrobatic circus performance with spectacular costumes, lighting and music. We had 2nd row center seats for the performance and we really enjoyed ourselves.
